Group Presentation — Islam in Daily Life
Develop an understanding of the religion and cultures of Islam; describe the significant ideas and texts of Islam; identify examples of religious influence in daily life.
Founded by the Prophet Muhammad in the Middle East during the 7th century, Islam shapes the religious, social, and cultural lives of its followers. All practicing Muslims are guided by the five pillars of Islam: alms (charity), hajj (pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca), prayer (five times per day facing Mecca), faith (belief in Allah as the one deity), and fasting (no consumption of food or drink from sunrise to sunset during the holy month of Ramadan). The Koran, a holy book containing Allah’s revelations to Muhammad, provides direction on aspects of daily life ranging from the restriction of women’s roles to abstention from alcohol and pork products. Many Islamic countries still use sharia, a code of rules and behavior, as the basis for their modern-day legal systems.
