Group Presentation — Islam in Daily Life
Historical Perspective

Islam influences not only the religious practice, but also the social and cultural lives of its followers. The Koran, or holy book, contains instruction on all aspects of life, from the prohibition of alcohol and certain foods to the roles of women. The five pillars of Islam guide followers to undertake acts of piety and faith, including pilgrimages to the holy city of Mecca. Islam emphasizes the importance of education, family, and respect for elders. In these ways, Islam has shaped individuals’ morality and behavior, from ancient times to the present.

OVERVIEW

You will be assigned topics that reflect issues surrounding the impact of Islam on the daily lives of its followers. Use what you have learned to participate in a group presentation in which you introduce various aspects of Islamic life to the class. To prepare for the presentation, you will research areas of Islamic life from education to women’s roles.

1. Interpret

Look at the illustration below. Answer the following questions on a separate sheet of paper.

This illustration depicts an Islamic master scholar instructing his students.

  • What Islamic values are depicted in this illustration?
  • How does the illustration show a reverence for holy scripture?

2. Research

Use the Daily Life through History articles listed on the right to research the ways in which Islam has shaped the beliefs, practices, and cultural life of its followers. As you read, keep your assigned topics in mind. Your group’s presentation will need to contain factual evidence from the readings.

3. Organize

Decide which members of your group will present each topic. Group members should use a 2-Column Table to organize their information. Work together to plan the order and style of your presentation.

4. Apply

Conduct your group presentation, making sure that each group member has adequate time to speak. Remember to include historic facts and concrete details that illustrate your topic. Consider pacing, tone, and audience as you present. When your group’s presentation is complete, address any questions from members of the class.

CHECK

Your teacher will use these questions to assess your performance:

  • Did your presentation include sufficient facts and details from the readings?
  • Did you ensure that your individual speech was clear and well-organized?
  • Did you use an appropriate tone and conduct?
  • Were you an active participant in your group’s presentation?
