Poster Presentation — Impact of Canals on Geography and Human Life
The construction of canals, or human-made waterways, has had far-reaching affects on the daily life of people throughout history. In 18th century England, domestic canal systems created more efficient transportation and thus, cheaper goods. The Suez Canal allowed European merchants to travel to Asia more easily, facilitating trade between East and West. China’s Grand Canal, constructed over one thousand years ago and still in use today, enabled rulers to collect tax revenues, and delivered necessary goods to the capital.
You will be assigned topics that reflect issues surrounding the impact of canals on geography and daily life. Use what you have learned to create a poster depicting scenes from a fictional city built along a canal. To prepare for your poster, you will research the ways in which the construction of canals has enhanced areas of life from the availability of goods to more efficient transportation routes.
Look at the map below. Answer the following questions on a separate sheet of paper.
This 20th century World Map illustrates the strategic value of the Suez Canal.
|
- Locate the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea. Why would a canal connecting these two bodies of water be advantageous?
- Which nations do you think benefited most from the construction of the Suez Canal?
Use the Daily Life through Historyarticles listed on the right to research the ways in which the construction of canals has affected the lives of people in different nations and time periods, focusing on Victorian England and Tang Dynasty China. As you read, keep your assigned topic in mind. Remember that your poster will need to accurately convey the ways in which canals have changed daily life, from transportation to the administration of distant colonies and provinces.
Use the Concept Map to organize your information. In the center oval, write canals. In the surrounding ovals, write details about the ways in which canals have affected daily life, such as opening markets for trade or transporting grain for consumption. Decide on the content, layout, and design of your poster.
Create your poster, making sure to incorporate both visual representations and written explanations. Include elements such as types of transportation used, foodstuffs and goods transported, and so on. When prompted by your teacher, present your poster to the class. Be sure to explain the historical significance of the various elements of your illustrations.
Your teacher will use these questions to assess your performance:
- Did you accurately depict the uses of canals?
- Did you use both written and visual elements to show how canals affect different areas of daily life?
- Did you include factual evidence in your presentation to the class?
- Did you display appropriate tone and conduct?
